House GOP Launches Effort to Cut Costs for Families

As part of the House Republican “Freedom Through Affordability” initiative, I am proud to sponsor two pieces of legislation titled “Sales Tax Holidays for New and Growing Families.”

My proposals would enact a six-month sales tax holiday for children’s toys, musical instruments, and children’s books, helping ease the financial burden on families raising the next generation.

With Pennsylvanians facing rising costs on everyday essentials, House Republican policymakers launched this initiative to deliver meaningful tax relief and lower costs; making Pennsylvania a more affordable place to live, work, and raise a family.

In addition to my legislation supporting new and growing families, the package includes other sales tax holidays on items like sports equipment, spring cleaning and gardening supplies, and essential baby products such as car seats and strollers.

This package also includes proposals to suspend the state’s Gross Receipts Tax on electricity and cell phone services for six months. Another proposal would reduce the state’s Personal Income Tax rate from 3.07% to 2.99% during that same period.

To continue the conversation and hear directly from residents, the Policy Committee is also launching the “Affordability Starts Here” tour, kicking off next week in Hanover, York County. For more information, visit policycommittee.com.

Supporting the Next Generation of Leaders in Agriculture

On Tuesday morning, I had the privilege of attending the FFA’s annual Legislative Breakfast and sitting with members of Cumberland Valley FFA. Following breakfast, I enjoyed taking the students on a tour of the House chamber.

Encouraging young people to pursue careers in agriculture and supporting their ambitions is essential to the future of our farming industry. I’m proud to continue advocating for programs that help these students succeed.

Listening to Our Farmers: Cumberland Farm Bureau Meeting

I was glad to attend the Cumberland Farm Bureau’s spring meeting in Newville on Monday evening and hear directly from local farmers about the challenges they’re facing. These conversations are critical to shaping policies that support Pennsylvania agriculture. As always, the food was excellent, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside our farming community to protect and strengthen this vital industry.

Celebrating Culture and Connection at HACC

Last Saturday, I had the privilege of attending a luncheon hosted by the Asian Indian Americans of Central PA (AIACPA) at HACC. We were honored to be joined by India’s consul general Amb. Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Sen. Greg Rothman (R-34), and many state and local officials as we celebrated 100 years of Bollywood. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize the rich cultural contributions of the Indian American community and strengthen connections across our region. Thank you to AIACPA for the invitation and warm hospitality!

Strengthening Home Care Across Pennsylvania

It was great to welcome Thomas and fellow advocates to the Capitol for Home Care Advocacy Day. We had an important conversation about the impact of home care services across Pennsylvania and the need to ensure a strong, sustainable system that allows individuals to receive care in the comfort of their homes. Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and advocate for this critical issue.

Welcoming Silver Spring Students to the Capitol

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of welcoming students from Silver Spring Elementary School to the Capitol. It’s always exciting to see young learners take an interest in state government, and I hope their visit provided a meaningful and memorable look at how our Commonwealth works.

Saturday is Mentored Youth Trout Fishing Day!

Just a reminder this Saturday, March 28, is Mentored Youth Trout Fishing Day across the Commonwealth.

To participate, youth anglers (those under the age of 16) must have either a free Mentored Youth Permit or a Voluntary Youth Fishing License. More information about the mentored youth program, as well as a link to obtain a permit or license, is available here.

The following Saturday, April 4, is the first day of trout season. If you haven’t already, be sure to buy your fishing licenses and permits and get your gear organized. Visit the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) online at www.fishandboat.com or the FishBoatPA mobile app for more information.

Bill Would Provide Another Tool to Combat Fentanyl Crisis

Legislation that would develop standards to certify police dogs trained to detect fentanyl passed the House of Representatives this week with my support.

The measure was introduced after law enforcement agencies asked that standards be established for training and certifying dogs to detect fentanyl, which is involved in one in four opioid-related overdose deaths in Pennsylvania. These standards would be developed in consultation with dog trainers and handlers, medical professionals, and veterinarians.

House Bill 1344 now goes to the Senate for its consideration.

PennDOT Seeks Feedback on Winter Services

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking the public’s feedback on winter services through an online survey.

The survey is available now through April 14 and should take about five minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous.

The 17-question survey asks respondents about their timeline expectations for safe and passable roadways, how they rank snow-removal priorities and how they rate PennDOT’s winter services.

Click here to take the survey.
